An Analysis of the First Two Years Based on the Formal Organization The subject of this paper is the first two years of life based on the book, â€Å"The Cider House Rules.† â€Å"The Cider House Rules† is a book about an orphanage in the town of St. Clouds’, Maine. Once a prominent logging town, St. Clouds’ now consisted of abandoned buildings, prostitutes and the children of prostitutes. (Irving et al, 1985) Also located in that depressed little town was an orphanage, simply called St. Clouds’. A man named Dr. Larch founded St. Clouds’ orphanage in 192_. He opened it with a dual purpose in mind. Not only is it an orphanage but a hospital, a hospital that clandestinely performs abortions. Women choose St. Clouds’ to have an abortion because they hear that the people are kind, it is a clean place in which after the procedure they won’t die, and because it is free. Women decided to have an orphan there because the child will stay at St. Clouds’ and be well taken care of until they are adopted. (Irving et al, 1985) Characters A few key characters run St. Clouds’. Dr. Wilbur Larch is the first to be introduced, being he is the founder the orphanage. He delivers the orphans and does what he calls the Lord’s work. (Irving et al, 1985) The Lord’s work is how Dr. Larch refers to performing abortions for the women that come to the hospital. (Irving et al, 1985) He performs them even though at this time they are illegal. (Irving et al, 1985) Dr. Larch also has other responsibilities he is accountable for. He is the doctor of the orphanage, and director of the boys division, he also chooses adoptive families, and gives overall supervision to the hospital. Dr. Larch is an intelligent man who is overworked, and as much as he loves the orphans he doesn’t always have time for them. Nurse Edna and Nurse Angela are the two nurses on staff. They live on the boys’ side of the orphanage and also take care of this divisi...
